2020 was a year of so many unfortunate occurrences that I can’t help but feel like the I need to declutter and ‘start over’ with 2021. A lot of us have also been working from home and surely we’ve noticed how much harder it’s been to keep our homes clean. Who knew staying at home would’ve made our floors so much dustier!? Or our kitchens so much harder to clean!? I’m sure we also have more things lying around that we need to get rid of. So let’s start the year right and declutter our homes with these easy tips!

1. one room at a time
If you look at your entire home or apartment you’ll wonder how the heck you’ll get this done! But start small, tackle only one room at a time or you’ll become severely overwhelmed.

2. use small portions of your day
Some of us may be able to dedicate an entire day or days to decluttering but others like myself really just can’t imagine spending an entire day doing that! So I like to use an hour here or there and take it one step at a time. This way it doesn’t seem so time consuming.
3. organize as you declutter
When decluttering have your storage bins and garbage bags ready so that you can pack each item into their respective bins or throw them out. This way once you’re done going through each room, all you’ll have to do is put away your bins and throw out the trash.
4. don’t hoard
There’s no doubt that you can give away some of your items or donate them. We really don’t need all the things that we keep stored in our homes. Ask yourself when last you used the item or if the item is of any use.

5. get help
If you think this is too much to take on by yourself, ask your friends to come over. Get some beer and order pizza and make it a ‘Decluttering Party’. Don’t forget to wear your masks though as we’re still in a pandemic.
Over the years I’ve read so many articles on tips for decluttering but these 5 were the ones that stood out to me most. I hope you have an excellent time decluttering and enjoy that amazing feeling afterwards.
